How do I fix "excessive apache connections"

Posted by the_go_453, 05-02-2008, 01:45 AM
I just received an email saying And when I was on the phone with the support, they told me my site had opened up 400 apache connections + using the GET command and was causing FTP slow downs. It just happens so that a file I posted made its way to a popular forum and all the sudden, everyone was downloading the file. What is the best way to correct this problem? and GET? Isn't that a FTP Command? but people were downloading via http://example.com/files/file.zip And yea, this site is hosted on a shared hosting account. Thanks!

GET is not only an ftp command, but also the method by which browser client fetches a file to the browser from the apache server. If you are not expecting this kind of traffic, it could be a vulnerability causing it. Otherwise i beleive you need to move an find other hosting solutions such as VPS as your website may not be fit for shared hosting anymore.

If all the connections are caused by a single very popular file and may not last indefinitely, the easiest solution would be to move that one file to another location, say on a VPS or even Amazon's S3 service. Then setup a HTTP redirect from the current URL to the new location and traffic will get shifted automatically.
