which CMS for such a site

Posted by gyaani_guy, 06-14-2012, 10:52 AM
Basically I have to clone such a site: http://www.skybluecredit.com/ There is a navigation bar linked to static pages. One sign up form that has to be secure. A small member's area where the user can see his submitted form details and status among other things. Later I would need to add a secure payment gateway system, something with which I have no experience.. Security is kind of important here. I could do this from scratch or with codeigniter, but am thinking of learning and doing it with a CMS. Can you recommend a CMS for such site please ? I have dabbled in wordpress before.. thinking of giving joomla a try , since wordpress is afaik a blogging platform. Thanks Edit: i should mention that the design part of the site would be handled by someone else, my job is backend coding (php). Last edited by gyaani_guy; 06-14-2012 at 10:55 AM.

Joomla is great if you are looking for a CMS that you can update the content easily, manage users, and Joomla can be very customizable with various plugins and components. I have worked with Joomla for years and it is flexible to any kind site you are wishing to work with. If you have any specific questions, I can try my best to help

Thanks\ for the offer! questions: 1. how much time investment can I expect to make to get to know joomla thoroughly enough to make the above site ? 2. how secure is joomla ? Or how easy is it to make joomla secure ? 3. integrating a payment gateway . How hard would it be ? I have zero experience without payment gateways and some experience with codeigniter

Joomla provides an abundant supply of resources that would help you to use it effectively. From personal experience, Joomla takes less than a week to get to know and for you to be able to use it in a production environment. Joomla is very secure. There are plugins out there to tighten the security on different aspects of the Joomla CMS but a standard installation of Joomla is secure enough to run a business website. Our hosting company uses Joomla and we are using a common installation of Joomla and haven't had any problems. The Joomla administration user interfaces is account protected. As I said, there are thousands of plugins for Joomla, there are payment gateways that are great to use with Joomla, some wich are compatible with PayPay for easy payment.

I'd give Drupal a go.

Between those two, I say Joomla. I'm getting weary of the security concerns with WP. As time progresses, it seems plugins and themes forcing a blog to be a cms is causing problems for the masses.

Joomla also has it's fair share of security risks too. I'd still recommend going for either Joomla or WordPress - but either way make sure they are both up to date. I'd lean more towards Joomla though as it is a true CMS, and experiences less memory issues etc server side usually.

harsha could you please elaborate ?

Posted by mg-, 06-15-2012, 11:25 AM
Probably because it is essentially what any wordpress site looks like..

Posted by dfxgrid, 06-16-2012, 05:26 PM
If it were up to me, I'd go with Wordpress like always.

Please do not use Joomla, it's a headache..Wordpress is definitely the way to go, we've been building clients websites on it for years and they love it! The first time we used joomla was the first time we lost a client

Wordpress is easier to use, but in my opinion limited in functionalities (If you're not a programmer yourself to extend them). Joomla has lots of advanced modules and components which can save you $$$ and have your website up and running very soon.

Wordpress has everything the site needs, so does Joomla. If security is number 1, go with Drupal. Its can be harder than the others, but can be very secure. Even whitehouse.gov runs on it. I like Joomla, was first CMS I learned, but prefer wordpress and drupal depending on the needs of the client.

Posted by hostultimo, 06-17-2012, 01:14 AM
Since you will be handling the backend coding on this I too would recommend drupal since wordpress might not be the best option for this. The reason why I say that is because you have to remember that wordpress is essentially a blogging website and as such would be best suited to those sites which requires quick and constant updated content. This site seems to not require those things and as such drupal would be best suited towards a sturdy image for your new venture while still incorporating some cms functionality such as updating and maybe small theme edits here and there.

This will be the best to use Wordpress for building the backend for such a website. It will help the best to find the required plaugins easily for the proper backend. This is just my opinion.

Why not create custom code which can be more flexible to develop feature in the future

Posted by error10, 06-17-2012, 09:42 AM
This hasn't been true for a very long time.

Posted by MonetizeScripts, 06-18-2012, 05:27 PM
Joomla would be great for that. Drupal is also good solution. But if you looking for simple CMS, I recommend sNews.

Why are you guys addicted to Joomla and Wordpress? There are much better and new Content Management Systems (CMS) and Content Management Frameworks (CMF). A website running on Wordpress or Joomla is much slower than a website that runs on the newest open-source CMS/CMF.

Posted by mSuleman, 06-19-2012, 07:42 AM
I would prefer Wordpress because of simplicity I am programmer and i use both but i love to use Wordpress its easy and simple. Joomla is very confusing ouch.

Posted by Smart2Host, 06-19-2012, 11:31 PM
I used to use Drupal but it is very simple and not that professional to use.

Posted by InternetBrothers, 06-19-2012, 11:34 PM
Wordpress will do

Posted by azio, 06-25-2012, 12:19 AM
If you're comfortable with CodeIgniter or anything similar, I believe you should code it yourself. Most likely you'll be spending more time trying to customize Drupal or WordPress.

Posted by tnhomestead, 06-25-2012, 01:10 AM
The problem with custom code is it takes longer to bring someone new down the road up to speed. If its a one man operation or a team, your ok, but, if down the road you want to go outside your group for work, any of the CMS are a better choice. Its a lot easier to find Wordpress, Joomla or Drupal coders than someone who knows your code. Also for PICS, etc, most of the CMS are a lot more secure to start with than most coders will come up with. That said I do like codeIgnitor -- its fast and easy to use. As far as drupal being simple and not professional, why does it power some of the biggest sites in the world? Just look at this list of some Drupal sites. http://groups.drupal.org/government-sites#USA And a good reason for sticking to the big three is ease of getting plugins and coding done!

Hey gyaani_guy, I'd go for Joomla for this kind of thing. I've worked with Joomla since 1.1, and it's always been great to me. It's easy to manage and saves the hassle of having to hand code all the login system and security bits etc. - PM

According to my opinion,WordPress is the Best content Management System for your site.

Posted by nehir, 06-28-2012, 04:41 AM
Create your own CMS ;-) - If possible, use your own framework, do not use any thirty-part framework. - Use phrase system for future usage.. (a.k.a multi-language support) - Use Add-on system.. so you can code your own add-ons.. - Secure your script! - It should have a admin panel.. you can code this at the last step. at the beginning use phpmyadmin to add/remove/edit data..

Joomla and Drupal are both powerful resources for such projects if you aren't looking to create your own CMS.

Posted by llocalmark, 06-28-2012, 04:18 PM
I too started with Joomla, but for the last year only been using Wordpress. As a programmer (I started programming in 1979!) I am comfortable with the coding structure of Wordpress, and it is extremely flexible. As another poster said, the site mentioned looks like a typical WP site, but in fact isn't, it probably hand crafted. It is 4 pages & a conatct form, which is so simple in WP (or Joomla or Drupal) plus a multi-step sign-up and pay process, which you will have to hand craft in any CMS if you have to clone that closely. As you know WP, why not go for WP\/

Truly any open source solution can have security risks. The benefit though is a community of devs looking and testing and discovering any security weaknesses that might be present.

I've got 20 sites and all of them running WordPress perfectly

Posted by Xeocop, 07-06-2012, 01:21 AM

Posted by warriortime, 07-11-2012, 03:58 AM
I agree with Steve on this, its the best to work with and completely flexible, if you need help with it, buzz me i will do it for you.

Joomla has lots of advanced modules and components which can save you have your website up and running very soon.

Posted by warriortime, 07-11-2012, 06:17 AM
I agree with you but Joomla is quite difficult for normal users, its better for advances users while WP is good enough for anyone.

Posted by gregtampa, 07-17-2012, 12:21 PM
I would use e107.org cms its pretty simple and not as complex as joomla and will get the job done.
