Posted by cparroyo, 09-20-2012, 05:30 AM
Hi! Im planning to start a web/domain reselling business. I am not an IT person but my partners are.But we all have other jobs and business to attend to.This business will not necessarily be our bread and butter so to say,but extra money is always good. I have almost zero to nil knowledge about this. Can anyone please give me a lowdown on what it's like on that business? Also,I'm choosing among the ff reseller companies: JaguarPC Knownhost MDDhosting iPage Thank you so much! Have a great day!

Web hosting this days is a full time career sort of a thing. There must be a dedicated person to handle clients transactions and support. You must start considering handing it to some one who see's it as his bread and butter sort of thing.

Hi thanks for responding hostnesta! Say,me and my partners are willing to hire a person to oversee everything.I mean, just like one IT person, and he'd manage the daily operations? Can he work from a single pc with stable internet connection?Or do i need to set up an office for it?Or a team of ITs,at the least?

You will be getting managed support in reseller hosting from your reseller hosting provider, so at the starting period you do not require dedicated support people to manage your clients. Single PC and one dedicated person can manage your clients. But, the single dedicated person should be very much familiar of hosting technology.

I recommend Hostdime. Their support is fast and the services are fully managed and can help you for most things.

Thank you for the very kind words and recommendation, dhcart! As some have said before, if you opt for a managed host, you'd have access to an entire team of sales/support personnel who have years of experience in the IT (hosting) industry. I'd say 90% or more of managed hosts, however, will not provide support directly to the end user (your client) so, at very least, you'd want to be attentive of support request by your clients to you so that you can try to answer those. If you do not know the answers to your client's support requests, you'd simply have to pass that request on to your host who would answer you and then you'd, in turn, answer your client. If you work a 9-5 (or other fixed schedule job) I'd suggest giving your clients a few contacts (maybe your cell phone or a phone number of one of your partners) so that your clients always have at least someone to contact in case of emergency who will have access to a computer to relay support requests if necessary. You do not necessarily need to provide a phone number but some method of emergency contact whether it is by phone or email. Either that or let your clients know that between hours X and Y their support requests will be delayed (hopefully this last resort option would not be the case). Let me know if you have any other questions. Have a good one!

You really don't need an office to start with and you may well share the workload between yourself and your partners. However, don't expect to make too much money of it for the first couple of months or maybe the first year. There's fierce competition in the hosting industry and one thing you should avoid is to attract customers by giving away oversold resources practically for free, which is a common trap among resellers.

Any certain reason you want to do a hosting business? If you know nothing about it, perhaps it may be a good idea to start a business in something you're passionate about and have knowledge of already.

First three got many positive feedbacks. IPage is for web hosting, not reseller.

The most important question is how do you find customers.

I am not sure why would you want to jump into a business you don't know anything about? Web hosting is THE most competitive business you would ever find in IT industry. Also, this is not a business where you jump in as a "part time" work. Trust me, I have seen lots of people trying that. They always think that managed hosting will cover the technical aspects and they would simply have to communicate with the clients over the phone (which could be done from anywhere). However, 2 months down the line, you see the same people trying to sell their clients to some bigger shark. Thinking before you act. Make a business plan (even if its part-time). Because you wouldn't be getting clients easily.

To Start a Hosting Business is Not a Kidding Part. You Must have to satisfy your Customer with your services & Support. Always Remember "Customer is King" So, Customer Satisfaction is your first priority.

Wow thanks guys! The response is overwhelming! To address your concerns: Why jump into reseller business if I don't know anything about it? Where do you find customers? - Well,I don't,but my partners do.Almost, they work for in the T industry. And from where I am (the Philippines),the IT industry here is just beginning to grow.It may seem like im jumping on the bandwagon too easily, but the market here for reselling is not yet saturated. There are alot of small businesses here in the Philippines and most of them lack online impact, let alone, online presence. Dedicated support team: - Hey DimeNoc Marcos. In any case we pursue with this, yes we plan on hiring someone to do that stuff for us.Eventually,if business is good, then we'll prolly hire a team. Oh btw, are you from Hostdime? (Thank you dhcart for the suggestion! ) Guys,is there like a website or a blog you know of that could give me a point-by-point explanation of the biz? Thank you!Really appreciate the response.I can see so much potential in this business (well here in the Philippines at least) and I want to do an extensive research on this,as much as I can. I'm thinking long-term here.
