Recommended File System
Posted by sentryhosting, 08-02-2009, 05:27 AM |
Hello,
I have a dedicated server running Linux CentsOS.
The default setup of my file system is:
/dev/sda1 450GB
tmpfs 2GB
/usr/tmpDSK 485 MB
Is this ideal? If not, what would you reccomend?
My Disk size is 500GB
Thanks

It will be better if you create separate partitions for /, /boot, /var, /home, /usr. Just as the example given below.
==================
/dev/sda2 19G 2,2G 16G 12% /
/dev/sda3 221G 2,7G 207G 2% /home
/dev/sda5 29G 5,6G 22G 21% /usr
/dev/sda1 251M 25M 214M 11% /boot
/usr/tmpDSK 485M 11M 449M 3% /tmp
=================
Also it will be better to create a 2G /tmp partition and a swap space equal to 1.5-2 times your RAM.

Hi, slight off topic here.
But seems like you are asking for "partition" setup recommendation, not "file system" recommendation. There is actually a difference in those two terms. Hope it helps, not trying to be rude or anything. Thanks.
Example "File systems":
Example "partitions":

Also, look into using LVM for your partitions except /boot, which needs to be raw extX. It's more flexible.
