Perimeter security for a hosting company

Posted by jclutter, 07-05-2009, 09:46 PM
Any suggestions on good perimeter security software or devices for a hosting company? A hosting company has to keep everything open on the perimeter because it's customers use all different ports for different things, that leaves us open to DDOS, DOS, etc. attacks. What do people see as a good way to handle this potential problem?

What is your perimeter? is it a server or VLAN with multiple servers I find it hard to believe that you have to open all ports and it doesn't sound very secure for a hosting company to do that, you may need to compile a list of ports that you need open and only open those ports.

We have multiple Cisco 7200 Series Routers managing our connections to the internet in front of multiple Cisco 3500 Series Switches with a few thousand servers (dedicated and colocated) behind this and over 2000 web-sites on close to 75 of those servers. I have custoemrs serving out all types of stuff, some on their own ports for security reasons.

We have actually complied that list, it is huge! Big router load also.
