Site slow with eaccelerator enabled
Posted by ridesign, 09-28-2009, 08:55 AM |
I have enabled eaccelerator on my server but the site does not appear to load any quicker. It is a site running wordpress, with a 200mb mysql db, with hypercache running.
I am on a uk VPS server with 512 mb guaranteed ram burstable to 768mb.
I have done tests on pingdom, and .js and image files take a long time. 3-4 seconds each even the small ones 0.9kb

Try using Super Cache that works well http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-super-cache/
If it is still slow try upgrading to a dedi or upgrade your VPS.

According to my personal experience, eaccelerator does not help a lot. Sometimes it even has more negative effects than positive.

my .js and image files take a long time to load even though they aren't that big?

I've also found eaccelerator can slow down page loads on a VPS. I suspect it was because of a bottleneck on disk i/o. Eaccelerator needs to write the compiled scripts to disk the first time a site is visited - if the disk is overloaded this may take longer than actually compiling the script. And of course an overloaded hard-drive / array will slow down everything else too.
Run top - do you see a high %age for "wa"?

You can configure eaccelerator to only use memory and no disk.
xCache however is superior to eaccelerator in every way.

Sure, but on a VPS memory is also at a premium. At the time it seemed like the only resource that was freely available was CPU - the main thing that these accelerators are supposed to save!
Ultimately for me the solution was simply to switch to another provider where disk i/o isn't a problem. I'll look into xCache when I get the chance though - thanks for the tip.

You are aware its allocating to memory regardless right?

I wasn't, thanks for the heads-up. However since
I still suspect that the main reason for the poor results I saw was probably disk i/o.

I ran top and see around 13% for wa

Just some more information about my server:
15gb total hd size and 12 gb is used (74%)
so would freeing up space help to speed up my overall site, or are there other problems?
