Am I asking too much?

Posted by nikos, 01-07-2004, 09:46 AM
I am a small reseller with 10 accounts.... I am ready to drop my current plan and move on with another reseller plan duw to the fact that the current host doesn't cut it. What I want to know is this: Is there a reseller plan out there that lets you have your own site where accounts can be activited immediatelly? I am aware that I can make a webhosting site, find a reseller that will let me use my own nameservers and write scripts and code to link everything together with a payment system etc.... But I am not capable of doing so. My php/coding is weak. Is there a plan out there that will make you your own store front and transfer yout current sites and of course take a cut out of each new account without risking that I will loose the client to the biger fish? Thanks in advance, I have learned a lot in this site. Nikos

Modernbill will allow you to do this and WHMAutopilot may also but I am not 100% sure. Be very careful offering a feature like this as it is a fraud magnet to say the least.

OKIHost is right, Modernbill will certainly do this! However, I still don't allow modernbill to do the final account creation, I want to check over things before I let it start tampering with accounts!!

Nikos,, You might also consider a Hsphere plan with the integrated billing, and will allow you the feature you are looking for... I agree with BWS on the modernbill/tampering thingy....

There are just too many people who signup and don't complete the payment process, and if they find a way to fool modernbill that they have paid, you could have a hacker or a spammer destroying your system (and credibility) in no time!

So the best way to resell is to make your customers wait till you manually activate their account?

Posted by Reseller-Center, 01-07-2004, 11:10 AM
Yes, just to keep down the fraudulent signups...

Always - Without question!

Well I have been looking all day today.... There are so many options.... This will be the 5th company I will be using so hopefully I have learned what not to go for. Anyone can recommend a good and reliable host that has limited reseller packages with the option to make it unlimited later on?

Make what unlimited? There is no such thing as unlimited. By decree, the word will be removed from the next edition of Webster's.

If you are asking about a reseller that allows you to host unlimited domains I think most will do that up to your space and bandwidth limits of the package you choose.

If this is your 5th time moving, it must be impacting your business. So find an established host that does not offer half the server for $15/mo and your halfway to finding an excellent host.

Hsphere is probably one of your best bets for this - you can set all accounts to moderated signup (meaning the account will be created and ready to go, but wont go live, or payment processed, until you have moderated the account and approved it).

Nikos is a reseller and as far as I'm aware, all automated account scripts require root access.

Increasingly, server providers are NOT allowing automated set-up scripts on their servers due to fraud, among other issues. The era of hyping "instant activation" will likely be drawing to a close before long. While not the ultimate in client convenience, it will spare you from problems that will devastate your business. I have found that most people understand that we are now in an era when security is important and that a little inconvenience for the sake of security is to be expected and is often welcomed.

We've found through expierence that we have even got to the point where we take details (no payment details), verify them and then tell the customer goto xyz.com to pay. It has cut fraud to 0 Rgds Rus

I agree, just too many scammers out there,,, We moderate everything,,sure it might take a little longer to set-up, although if you have 24/7 support this should only be a momentary lag, as they should be able to verify the user and moderate/monitor them and get them "rolling"... No matter what software you need/use...

I agree with the instant setup comments, I just sold my autopilot license because of the high rate of fraudulent transactions since Sept (over $6000 worth). Of course that was used for dedicated servers mainly, but it still applies. 99% of the time, if someone is looking for instant setup they are either a spammer, hacker or other unmentionable. Make them wait an hour or two, if they are serious about your service then they will be fine with the wait, and feel better knowing that the box they will be put on won't be subject to spammers and hackers in the middle of the night.
