Sent E-mail Errors

Posted by SaintGTR, 11-14-2009, 05:51 AM
I get a couple of these errors sent back to me when someone signs up for my vBulletin forum. Any idea how to fix it? I have setup ReverseDNS for the domain as well.

Your IP definitely got listed at AOL network. I have faced the same issues with my qmail server too. Just send a request to aol, they will whitelist your IP.

Comcast does the samething, as well as some private e-mail providers.

http://postmaster.info.aol.com/errors/421dnsnr.html The above URL clearly indicate that your mail server IP need a rDNS. Most of the mail servers check rDNS of the IPs of the incoming mail server to avoid spam emails. You need to contact your host OR the Data Center people to set a rDNS for your mail server IP.

I have, the IP xx.xx.xxx.173 is setup through the control panel to the domain. Apparently the mail server IP is xx.xx.xxx.125. So I need the mail server on the domain to resolve to the xx.xx.xxx.173 IP, but I don't know how to do that.

Have you confirmed the reverse dns is functional? Is the mailserver the ip the one your doing the reverse dns for? It sounds like something is wrong.

The first spam test that just about any mail server runs are DNS checks. It's important to be sure all your DNS records for your mail server will return the same information. Here's how it works: 1. Your mail server identifies itself to the remote server (for example: mail.cheezydomain.com) 2. The remote mail server does a reverse DNS lookup on the IP address your server is using for the connection. It wants to see that mail.cheezydomain.com is returned. If this fails, many mail servers will drop the connection at this point. 3. The remote mail server does a forward DNS lookup on the hostname returned by the reverse DNS lookup. It wants to see the same IP address your server used for the connection. This is not employed by all mail servers, but the big guys are doing this. Again, if this test fails, the remote mail server will likely drop the connection. 4. Your first attempt to send the message is refused with an error message "Try again later". This is greylisting and Yahoo is the biggest practitioner of this. Only legit mail servers will actually try to resend the message. Most spammers are try to dump mail out in such a large volume that if the first try doesn't succeed, it's just forgotten about. Large guys like Yahoo have procedure where you can get your mail server whitelisted so your mail is not delayed. Otherwise, expect a delay of a couple of hours before the recipient gets the email. Hope this help.

Well the issue I am having is (from what I found out) is that IP of the mail server (according to the e-mail back from comcast ends with .125, while the IP of the RDNS and the domain (dedicated IP) ends with .173. It seems like I have to get the IP of the mail server for the domain to end with .173 and not .125. I have never done this before so I am not sure how.

If you have root access to your server , then try to add the IP you want to change to the file /etc/mailips . You can follow the steps listed below. The then try ti send emails . After that you arestill facing issue with sending mails to AOL. If yes, the try to change the exim outgoing IP and correct the rdns. Check this tread http://24x7servermanagement.com/blog/?p=23
