Many Server are in Safe Mode Now??

Posted by seekhosting, 01-08-2004, 12:59 AM
Hi, Recently, I found that the servers of some of my Reseller Accounts have changed to "Safe Mode". A lot of customers have complaint about that. I have asked the hosting companies to turn off the "Safe Mode" but they all refuse to do that. 1. Are most servers of hosting companies configure in "Safe Mode" now? 2. How much protect can be if turn on "Safe Mode"? Best regards

Im sorry if this is TOTALLY wrong. If your talking about PHP safe mode this can me turned off by using a php.ini file in the program execution folder (If you use a forum in a folder called "forum", put php.ini in this folder" the php.ini file needs to contain nothing more than basically: safe_mode = off If you are talking about a different safe mode, i do apologise

Hi, Thanks for your assistance. Yes, I mean PHP safe mode. Actually, I did not use any existing PHP scripts download from the Internet myself. However, some clients complaint that their PHP scripts (e.g. gallery, etc..) cannnot run recently with the error message "Cannot run in Safe Mode". What's exactly the "program execution folder? How can I know that which folder is the "program execution folder"? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

This is the folder that the script is installed in ex: yourdomain.com/friends/gallery/index.php you need to put the php.ini file in the "gallery" folder

Some use this and some dont. It would depend on the host and their preference of security or functionality. The tighter the security, the less functional their servers become. Some hosts would rather deal with opening holes after a customer complains whereas others just moniter some potential issues and may not have the extra support tickets from customers complaining that their gallery doesn't work. Safe Mode disables some potentially harmful functions, but also tend to disable or limit functions that are actually useful and relevant to particular scripts. There's no fullproof way to secure a server, but as long as their is a good distaster recovery plan, then there can be a balance between security and functionality. I thought any changes to server configuration even it it be at the virtual site level would need to be done by root. If I understand the issue correctly, this person is a reseller and doesnt have access to root and therefore can't create a file owned by root.

To some extent this is correct. A user can disable safe_mode using a php.ini file but root can disable the user's ability to disable safe_mode (that's a lot of "able"s )
