RAM Usage on cPanel Server

Posted by zimmerru, 02-12-2010, 12:39 PM
So way back I started with a dedicated with 512MB of RAM.. then upgraded to a better one with 1GB of RAM, and am now on a server with 2GB of RAM. Every time I upgrade the RAM usage goes up as well. In other words no matter how much RAM I have had, its always about 90% used. Is this typical of cPanel or is it something I should be concerned about? Are there things I can/should do to minimize memory usage? Maybe I'm reading this wrong.. but TOP says there is only about 90MB of RAM free out of the 2GB, and cPanel "Server Information" Shows the following: Memory: 1990688k/2031168k available Any insight is appreciated.

It stores stuff in memory for later use. Typically the more you can store in memory and out of swap the better your server will perform. With that being sayed if you only have 90mb free i would prob. start looking at which application is using the majority of memory and give it a restart. and see what that frees up.

Linux is known to cache memory on the server. It will eat up all the ram available (or almost) and keep it available when software needs to use it. It does not mean that the ram is actually being used, but the OS caches it to assign it to who needs it. It reserves and assigns ram as applications run on the server. So you should be fine. Look at the "free -m" output command on linux and you will see the buffers/cache the server is taking in ram Hope this helps

ahh ok, that does explain a lot. I was hoping there would be a command where I could see what was actually being used and that works perfectly. Thanks for your assistance!
