How do I use extra ip's that my host gave me?

Posted by chargers, 02-12-2010, 10:43 PM
Hello, I bought a new dedicated server. I also bought 2 extra ip's but I can't get these ip's to work. I have HyperVM installed in the server. My host just provided me the 2 ip's in a ticket. So in HyperVM, I added in "IP Address Pool" and restarted server. Then I made a OpenVz VPS with the ip which was successful. But still the ip doesn't ping or work. So what seems to the problem, has my host not routed it to my server? Please help.

Assuming that your host has done their job, are you sure that you put the correct values for gateway, netmask and such?

If you have added them with the correct subnet and have verified you added the right IP addresses, and made sure there is not a firewall issue, I would open a ticket with your host to have them also check to see if they have the right vlan for your machine.

What will be correct values for gateway, netmask ? My host provided me with the root login and the other 2 extra ip's. Can someone help me out if i give a login info? Last edited by chargers; 02-12-2010 at 11:32 PM.

Your host will be able to provide you with the gateway and netmask for your IP's. I would recommend opening a ticket or emailing your host to get this information. You could even ask that they add the IP's for you.

Your host would be the best people to get this resolved for you as the information available here is very limited.

Hello, I think ip's are ok. When I ping from server root, i get this - Also when I do route, I get this - Does this mean anything to you guys? As I can ping from the host node, but not from outside. Also I notice the ip is set to venet0, others are eth0, does this matter?

Hi, On the hardware node run: This will stop all containers!!! I'm assuming these two new IPs are in a different subnet from your route information.

Yes, you will be able to ping them from inside, that won't be a problem. But if they are not responding from outside, then have your host look into it and ask them the correct gateway and subnet mask. You will see venet0 inside a VPS and not eth0 unless it is a xen node. The main IP of the VPS will be on venet0:0.
