New here...have reseller host question...m

Posted by my3shadows, 11-02-2004, 06:12 PM
I currently have reseller account with Ace-host.net and am ready to ditch them. I've done lots of research here for a new one and submitted a quote request last night and have it narrowed down to a few. But here's my question... The problem that I'm having with Ace-host is that my sites keep losing their connection to their MySQL databases. What would cause this? (they won't tell me, I just get the canned response "It's been fixed, sorry for the inconvenience") Is there something I can look for specifically in a new host so I can avoid this? Or are they just not taking care of their servers? I've read some really bad reviews here at WHT re: Ace-host...and I certainly agree. But I will say that they have always had quick response times to my tickets. I just wish I didn't have to submit a ticket so often! Thanks, Rachael

there could be many causes. One could be they have their connection limit set low so when that limit gets reached not just by your website but all the sites on the server that error happens.

Hi my3shadows, Choosing a reseller provider is an important decision. I always recommend customers take a good look at clustered H-Sphere providers (though I am biased). H-Sphere clustering allows resources to be spread across several servers, rather then packing every possible resource (DNS1, CP, DNS2, eMail, HTTP, MySQL, etc..) and as many customers as possible onto 1 server, before adding another one. This type of single server environment model can often lead to the issues you are seeing above if the servers are loaded with too many customers.

If you planing to run reseller account then my advice always look for primary reseller. It will solve most of your problems.

There's are a lot of good reviews on various webhosts here. Go read them up and try out their support response time or sales. If the response is good and the price fits your bill. Go for it and don't forget to drop a review on the host after a few months for the newbies here.

1) They could've set a low connection limit as mentioned previously. or 2) Your site is busy enough to use up quite a number of connections and/or not closing open ones fast enough. It would help to see what kind of site you are hosting and how busy it is.

I've read that some people said the few hosting don't support the resellers. Make sure your new hosting have support for reseller so you can get some help. Last edited by TRIBOLIS; 11-03-2004 at 03:07 AM.

The site that I'm having the most problem with is the one below in my sig. There are only 2 databases involved in that site...one for the Invision Board and one for my links and articles. I set up the connection for the links and articles database via Dreamweaver where it writes the php code for you...Is there something I should check for there? Although, I would think if it was my site causing the problem, they would be real quick to point that out, and they haven't. As far as traffic goes...compared to this board, it's not busy at all. I have 300+ members, but only half of them post and usually not every day. Not to mention that the last time it went down was at 11:00pm Monday night...not a very busy time for a parenting community. The time before that was last Sunday morning at about 8:00am...also not a very busy time. Anyway, I think I'm going to go with Reseller-Center. I'd like to give H-Sphere a try and they were quick to respond to a question on their forum and their feedback here looks good. So hopefully they'll be a good choice. I'll be sure and post a review after I've been with them a while. Thanks for your feedback! Rachael

Just wanted to post an update and a review. I ended up going with Cartika Hosting instead of Reseller Center. I'm sure RC would have been just fine, I just decided that Cartika was a better fit for me. So I signed up a few days ago and so far 6 of my 7 sites have been moved with no problems. I moved 5 myself, but when I mentioned that I was a little concerned about moving my largest site, Andrew from Cartika quickly offered to move it for me and did so successfully within the day. Which I consider to be above-and-beyond service. So far, I'm extremely pleased with the service level and my newly moved sites are running faster than they ever did. Not to mention that I absolutely LOVE H-Sphere. It was a little daunting for me at first with all the DNS setup...but Andrew helped take care of that as well. Keep up the good work! Thanks, Rachael

Hi Rachael, Thanks for the wonderful review. I seem to see these responses from many cPanel converts: The power of H-Sphere clustering Please keep me updated on how you are progressing and as always, do not hesitate in contacting me personally if you require assistance. Andrew

It could be because they're maxing out the MySQL connections on the server or the CPU load on the server is so high that the MySQL server is having trouble staying online.

Yes - that is exactly what the problem was. While migrating the databases over to cartikahosting for the OP, it became obvious that the host had overwhelmingly oversold their servers. This is to be expected in "silo'ed" cPanel environments. Cram all possible resources onto 1 server (mysql, DNS, HTTP, eMail, control panel, etc) - then oversell the heck out of it by selling 1gig/40GB reseller plans for $9.99 - and it should be no surprise at all that resources were unstable.

Ahhhh..... If only it was just $9.99....lol. The package was actually much worse - price-wise and overselling-wise. $29.99/mo 10gb/100gb. And to think....I'm only paying a couple of bucks more for you guys! I guess you just live and learn. Thanks again...btw...the cron worked fine. My comics loaded with no problems. Thanks! Rachael

LOL - maybe a few bucks more - but nowhere near those resources Great News ! Sadly, I cannot take credit for this one - I simply pointed you in the right direction - ultimately, you solved this one yourself
