First, are you on a virtual private server or a dedicated server? Most web hosting companies, if not all, will not give you access to SSH on shared hosting environment. To have access to SSH you must be either on a virtual private server or a dedicated server, or you may contact your hosting provider and see if they will provide you access to SSH on your hosting account.

Many shared hosting companies will give you SSH by request, though they do often ask for ID.

Hello, I also wanted to add that SSH may be on a different port for security reasons. Either may you will need to contact your host. Regards, Jack

If this is your VPS, the hostname will be server.domain.com and the username will be root. PuTTY will work perfectly if you give it the right information.

I don't know, but when I first got a VPS I was not able to login directly trough SSH, but I had to go trough console and first of all change my root pasword and then the SSH login worked...maybe it helps. you could as well try a linux LIVE CD [does not matter whet distro...] and perform ssh -p 22 [or put your port number here] root@ip to make sure the problem is not in your ssh client

You might need to add your IP to the allow list as well as change the port number.

Ye I could stablish connection with ZOC thanks folks though still I dont know if this is enough to test is really vps, since sometimes hosts give access to ssh in shared

If you have "root" user you are not in shared hosting, but i don't think any host around would give you a shared hosting account and said it's a VPS, they will go out of business around a week with multiple fraud/chargeback thread about them.

You rarely get access to ssh with shared. Unless your are going to be running IRC processes. I am not sure what program you are using to login via ssh but I recommend the SSH Secure Shell Client. The only problem with that is you can only download it off of .edu webservers. The program is offered to education (colleges) but not the public. You can download it from any of the college sites legally and use it fine and it is the best program. PuTTy is ok but the one I am recommending is better!

SSH username can also be in the format 'server.domain.com', even though it is generally used as the hostname. You should contact your host about this. They may not have SSH enabled for this user or may be SSH is running on a different port other than 22.

What is the error that you are getting? Please post the exact error that you are getting. The resolutions depends on the error that you are getting while trying to connect.
