What to install on dedi for just uploading media by ftp?

Posted by hurry1, 07-07-2016, 12:28 AM
Greetings. I wanted to buy the basic SP-32 enterprise dedicated server at OVH for hosting, downloading, and streaming of the original files of the videos and audios I record in my home studio. Youtube and Soundcloud reduce the sound quality so much. I have never bought an unmanaged dedi before. I don't know how to use SSH. I have friends who know SSH, etc. but have not done server management before. I wanted to seek help here. I would just need ftp to upload my mp4 video and m4a audio files. And an option to point a domain name at that main folder. I need only these two things. 1. Is Cent OS 6.7 x64 fine for this? Or which one is best for hosting multimedia files? 2. Can I buy the cheap $3 ISPManager lite 5 admin panel to point the domain and for ftp? 3. OVH has Ddos. Will I need to install firewall or any server hardening scripts? If so, which one? 4. What else would I need to install? Would I need to install php or any other things on the server for my above two requirements only? 5. Would I need to hire someone to manage it if I just need to upload and link media from it? 6. Any other suggestions? Please kindly do let know. If this message is not in the right forum, please move it accordingly. Many thanks in advance. Last edited by hurry1; 07-07-2016 at 12:40 AM.

I you my operating system centos 6 64bit It is better to use a control panel for easy setup, for example, cPanel or DirectAdmin But do not forget there are a lot of details on setting up a server to function properly, they must be learned

Cpanel is quite costly. Would it be needed in my case when I need to upload files by ftp? Will not ISP Manager lite do? Can I read somewhere or what are exactly the basic scripts I need or need to learn for a dedi, whatever I want to use it for? And what are the bare specifics I need just for having a primary domain name and uploading files via ftp? Thanks again.

1- ISP Manager Is good But my recommendation is a minimum of panel DirectAdmin Very cheap 2- Do not forget to set up a server requires security, optimization, etc. What is your reason for using a dedicated server? How much storage space and bandwidth do you need?

Sure, thank you so much. Will installing DirectAdmin be enough for a primary domain name and uploading media files via ftp? Which things need to be exactly installed for security, optimization, etc. for my particular usage of streaming/downloading of media files? I would need at least 2 Tb space and 100 TB monthly bandwidth (500 mbps unmetered turns out to be 160 tb/month right?), more than what is offered by any VPS or most dedi hosts.

1- DirectAdmin control panel can add unlimited domain 2- Not perfect but good for defaults But any server need to customize technical and security 3- Yes, you need a large and dedicated server you want to I hope the tips are good

Do I need install apache, nginx, php, mariadb, java, etc. for just a primary domain and hosting media files if I have ISP Manager lite installed? Please do let me know.

Apache should be automatically installed by ISPManager if it provides an autoinstaller, same with PHP and MariaDB. Java is usually not required unless you are hosting Java Server Pages, and nGinx is not needed either, as you should already have Apache (which is another web server).

If you want to use the server only for your personal use, to upload videos or whatever via ftp you don't really need directadmin/cpanel/other. You just need to install everything you want to use, for example if you want to go on www.123.123 you need nginx/apache (personally I use nginx), if you want to use php scripts, then install also php, if you need databases, then install mysql, etc. It's just a waste of money to pay for directadmin/cpanel if you do not resell. It's so basic and simple, you can just search on google "how to install mysql on linux" and you'll find tutorials that even a 12 yrs old can do. It's really not complicated, at least in my opinion. Otherwise if you are a big spender just buy cpanel and everything it's done by itself. You just click on some images to "create account"; "add domain"; "set ftp password". But you don't need it.

If you use SFTP instead of FTP no additional programs need to be installed as this will go over SSH. Have you thought about installing Plex on the server to stream your audio and videos?

Plesk panel costs less than US$5 per month only. https://www.plesk.com/plans-pricing/ A lot more cost effective for self use
