Transferring sites?

Do web hosts transfer your sites for you when you change hosts? How much should I expect to get charged for this?

most webhosts would transfer your stuff for free. contact the host you're switching to. With reseller plans most webhosts would transfer a particular number of accounts for you, and charge you if it's over that figure. Figure can be 10-30, sometimes even more, totally depends on who you're signing up to!

If you are transfering to a host with the same control panel as you use it shouldnt be an issue for the new host to do the transfers for free.

I only have about 5 main sites that I need transferred. But one is so big that it would take hours for me to upload through FTP, it also has several databases that I would have to manually backup and restore. Someone that could transfer these sites over a backbone type connection would save me lots of time and get my sites back up and running as soon as possible which is what I need.

what i'd suggest is use cpanel's built in full backup feature; it'd transfer the entire thing. if you say remote destination is FTP you can put the backup image directly onto the new server, hence your bandwidth won't make a difference.

Generally hosts will transfer your content free of charge, up to a particular number of sites. The larger site might not be suitable for the built-in transferring functions of some control panels, especially cpanel, which generally suggests sites not exceed 250Mb. You may want to ask for jailed shell access and transfer via SSH.

did a 1.2gb transfer about a week ago only reason they recommend not to is cause it ties up the server's resources somewhat!!

The best method is to create a complete backup and have it sent to your new account (remote ftp option) and then have your host restore it. That will restore everything including the databases, email accounts etc. and it doesnt matter how large the site is.

Bingo! That's the easiest and best way. I've found WHM's account transfer process to be lacking in reliability. It's an utter waste of time

As said before your new provider should do server to server transfer. As long as you are using the same control panel...example if your current host uses cpanel, and your next host uses cpanel you should have a problem, should be free. On the other hand if you are using two different control panels could be a slight cost in the transfer, nothing too bad though.

Aside from the SSH transfer, full backup + server-side restore is great as well, as others have suggested. That's why it is called a suggesiton.

Most hosts offer this free of charge now and most hosts if they don't offer it publicly will agree to do the transfers for you if you sign up.
