Transfer files from one host to another.

Hi all, Just got myself a reseller, my friend has a few sites on his old host and wants to get on my new reseller. he has wordpress and some other websites. So we got a few databases. What's the best way to get his files to my host? I have WHM and cpanel. Thank you! Any help is appreciated, I'm fairly new to all this

What control panel is being used at your friends old host? If it's cPanel to cPanel, generate a full backup of your friends account(s) and provide that backup file to your reseller provider. The accounts will be restored completely under your reseller account. If it's not a cPanel to cPanel transfer, upload the data files via ftp and move the DBs using PHPMYADMIN.

Dreamhost. I'm not sure if they use cPanel. If I can't do cPanel to cPanel - the easiest way is ftp and phpmyadmin then? Thanks.

Yes, that or using SSH to make a Mysql dump and then ftp it to the new server.

Also, ask your new host if they'll do the transfer for you. A lot of hosts don't mind and it will make your life a little easier. --Tina

It's with hostgator. They don't mind if the stuff is on their server but external hosts they charge an hourly rate at $75. I'll do it myself for that.

On your old host account, make backups using cpanel "backup and restore" options. It creates backup of both data and database in single tar file. Then you can ftp these backups to the new host account and do the restore.

Your reseller provider can transfer free of cost

The traditional way is to download everything via FTP then upload to your space. If both are cpanel based you can use cpanel backup/restore option directly.

Its important to point out that if you go with the ftp/mysql dump option you are going to lose your email. Only way to seamlessly transfer everything over is by doing a full cPanel back-up and having your new cPanel host restore the account.

If you have ssh access, you can transfer files with the "rsync" command.

DreamHost uses cPanel, but they have removed cPanel's backup system (in order to disallow the use of host-to-host cPanel migrations) and have integrated their own backup system (which basically gives you a regular cPanel full backup). You will need username/password for every DreamHost account you want to move to your reseller account and you will need to create one Full Backup for each account. You'll need to download these full backups to your computer. Then you'll need to contact HostGator at their restore form ( http://hostgator.com/restore.php ), upload the full backups to the root of your reseller account via FTP, and they will restore them to your account for free (it's free because you're providing the backup file).

If they don't provide backup restoration for free and don't have a system you can restore the backups through by yourself then you should run from that host like the plague. -Tyler Morrison

Dreamhost doesn't use cPanel. They have their own proprietary panel built from scratch (far better than cPanel, IMO) and also allow full SSH access. OP: If you're comfortable with ftp and phpmyadmin, use them. Personally I'd use rsync for the files and mysqldump - transfer - mysql for databases but it amounts to the same thing.
