ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Los_Angeles /etc/localtime /etc/init.d/ntpd restart (replace the America/Los_Angeles with your location obviously)

root@server etc]# /etc/init.d/ntpd restart -bash: /etc/init.d/ntpd: No such file or directory

You are not talking about a VPS, right?

You didn't specify what OS this was. If CentOS, try yum -y install ntp, then "service ntpd restart".

In case if you are using VMWare and the time on the ESX is different from the time you are trying to set and also if the VMWare tools are configured to sync the time that will indeed be the reason.
