Bluefur appears to use Canadian data centers: http://www.bluefur.com/our-datacenter/

What is your budget? Unfortunately the number of data centers in Canada are limited, so there aren't that many choices available.

Posted by media r, 06-01-2010, 01:18 PM
Sdx maybe research: http://www.canadianwebhosting.com/aboutus.asp They offer a reseller package and their datacenters are located in Vancouver and Toronto.

Posted by sdxgroup, 06-01-2010, 02:19 PM
it would be preferred that the company offering the canadian reseller package also provides support via ticketing system... if anyone knows of a host like this pls let me know

Posted by HighLayer, 06-01-2010, 02:27 PM
If not all the hosts, most of them will provide support via ticketing system.

Posted by sdxgroup, 06-01-2010, 02:31 PM
would they provide support to my customers as well?

Posted by media r, 06-01-2010, 02:52 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm not aware of any Canadian Resellers offering end user support as of right now.

Posted by HighLayer, 06-01-2010, 02:56 PM
You are looking for End User Support. If the host mentions it, then they will provide support to your customers.

I'm compelled to offer a opinion on the matter. I've been In then Out of some of those mentioned in the above posts. Being Canadian I would of course want to spend my money in Canada, but don't. I found too many Canadian web hosts, are just like others - - reselling resold resells. You know - affiliate resellers of resellers reselling... you get the point, and, the servers tend to be in Texas anyway or there abouts. On top of that, some Canadian hosts tend to embellish their offerings more so than the u.s. counterparts. Such as a package might offer 10 domain names with up to "10 free email accounts" (one each) and/or "free cPanel" or "up to 1g free bandwidth" - abusing the word "free" (like the rest of the 'net does), but for the most part, price everything separate. If some of the hosts were selling new cars, they'd probably say the price includes free air in the front tires with the micro-print outlining the fees to inflate the rear tires plus handling of course. Sorry, but Canadian web hosts have a long way to come before I'd bring my customers domains back across the 49th. And no, I'm not a traitor. I'm just sensible and frugal when it comes to my customers domains, their money, and host reliability. Apologies to those Canadian hosts (servers) that are trying hard. J

Good points made Jim

Posted by sdxgroup, 06-01-2010, 04:37 PM
Jim, thanks for your post, it provides a lot of insight. The reason I am looking for a Canadian reseller is because I think Canadians would prefer their site hosted within the country. I personally don't care where it's located, but trying to cater to Canadians. I think you're right about Canadian web hosts (the majority of them anyways), have a long way to go. That's why I'm having a hard time finding a suitable host!

Hi sdxgroup, I have a small web design business in Vancouver and for the last 8 months have been offering hosting to my customers to provide them with a trusted one stop solution. As such the quality of service has mattered to me greatly. I too set the requirement of a Canadian data centre though I am not interested in my upstream host providing direct support to my client base. Most of them won't ever see their control panel and have no idea what FTP is. I have also been focusing on HA or grid/cloud offerings which are even rarer in Canada. So far I have been with two Canadian reseller hosts not mentioned on this list: Eircawas the first one I tried and was also my first experience with H-Sphere. Can't say as I much liked H-Sphere and Eirca definitely had some issues with their support system if not their actual support people. I wrote extensively on webhostingtalk about that experience. UptimeHost is where I am at now. I must say that I like the hardware and pricing structure. It is set up as a grid utility service. But every couple of months I need something done that is not self serve like install an SSL Cert and I end up waiting two weeks for it to get done. Some time ago I had my wife send a sales request to them and it was never answered so it is possible that they are not even taking new clients. This has had me shopping around for solutions again. I have not used any of these but have looked into: Netfirms (they don't heavily advertise Canadian but check out this article on their blog http://www.netfirms.com/blog/2009/12...nd-more-desks/) I don't particularly like any of the reseller offerings they have as they are not really set up for overselling (common in Canada.) However they have a nice hardware set up and clients that have hosted with them have been happy. Cartika Again with the H-Sphere control panel on most of their reseller plans but hey do have cPanel on their new cloud server options. They also have some end user support options. Again I have read good things about their support on this forum. iWeb Says they run their own data centre and they have extensive connections to the internet. They are in the business of providing server collocation, managed servers, and web hosting/reseller hosting. Their control panel is called Panelbox but it is just WHM/cPanel with an extensive skin. They run their servers in a HA fail-over set up with SAN storage but not on a grid. Having the same difficulties as you and not being interested in H-Sphere i am also looking outside of Canada and these options look good (again no personal experience, just what I am considering myself): InnoHosting They offer servers in the USA and UK and have an extensive list of included services such as free billing software and SSL Cert, cheep domain and SSL reseller account with enome, free end user support. Lots of good things said about their support on this forum. They also have VPS with server management and an "end user support" option. VPS.net This is a VPS ONLY environment but if one is going to do a self managed vps this looks like a good hardware and community to go with. They have an extensive forum for newbie support and $10.00 per incident support for non managed servers. They have a fully managed server offering as well if you don't want to get into all the dirty work. Rackspace Cloud is a rather hefty option with a minimal buy in of $150.00 month. But I have to say that if I was a larger company I would be hard pressed to not switch over. Their grid hosting with compute unit charge means that you pay for what you use and your clients pay for what they need. This means no extra work involved if one you your clients makes a successful site. They have SSL in a self serve (reseller level) option with unlimited ip's for $20.00 month. Also have to like the integrated file server option for backing up local computers and CDN for busy websites. They do offer support and billing for your clients but it will cost you $3.00 month per client you want supported. All this is presented in a proprietary control panel so you have to make sure it will work for your needs and like H-Sphere it wont auto generate accounts from billing software like WHMCS. But it is a smooth looking offering. BTW: my disinterest in H-Sphere is mostly based on the limitations it applied to me. I am already a OpenSRS domain reseller (also a Canadian company ) and the H-Sphere system forces you to resell domains through your upstream hosts integrated reseller account. In all cases I have seen this is enome for whom I am not interested in reselling. Problem/advantage with H-Sphere servers is the billing software is included so everything is already done for you. If this works for you this might not be a bad option. But I have already switched hosts once this year and may need to do so again. Moving websites to a new provider when one goes down the crapper is one kind of hell. Having to transfer domains that are locked into an old host sounds worse or even impossible if you do not maintain some sort of hosting with them. Kind of locks you into their service. It is possible to run H-Sphere alongside a billing software like WHMCS and manually create accounts from orders generated. I would consider this with Rackspace's Cloudsites because I like the seemingly simple, functional and effective control panel. But for some reason H-Sphere just did not work for me, personally.

wow, thanks for your post. it really gave me a lot of insight into my issue. i will have to check out all these companies.. btw my personal accounts are with InnoHosting and they are pretty great so far. the only problem i have is that they don't have a Canadian datacenter, which i really wish they did b/c that would solve all my problems! question for ya... do you think it really matters to host clients' sites in Canada? would it make a difference if the servers were in Cali or somewhere else in the US? ps- i think i've decided on using cpanel and whmcs. does anyone know why this would be a good (or bad) option? thanks in advance for all your posts.

As for why it might matter where your content is hosted Canada and the USA currently have very different laws around copyright. The 2 countries can also have very different opinions on appropriate content re politics, opinion, religion, gambling etc. If you do any work for non profits or government funded agencies they may be required to ensure that their data stays in the country. Though in my own province we contract out to a US company for all of our electronic provincial medical records and all the data is hosted in the USA. Some people have been worried since the tightening up of borders after Sep 11th that privacy of data for foreign companies is no longer sacred in the USA. All that said I am still considering going with the us server for bulk of my stuff and just getting a separate server in Canada if it ever comes up. How much is your support system with Innohosting used by your clients? Cus it does look like iWeb would be the simple solution for you if you could give up included end user support. Personally, with your standard choice on linux servers being between Parallels products and cPanel I would go with cPanel every time. cPanle is what Innohosting is using if I am not mistaken. Because I am looking into the potential of running my own server I am also considering ISPmanager Pro but it is not yet a common offering on shared hosts. It is very similar to cPanel but reportedly much slimmer in resource use. Last edited by Gaillen; 06-04-2010 at 08:14 PM. Reason: added gambling

I use ISPmanager Pro for shared hosting. I like it. ISPmanager uses a minimal system resources. It is very effective. It's great!
