Successes with reseller hosting?

Posted by DaveGiant, 02-16-2011, 06:16 PM
Hi, I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on how to succeed with reseller hosting as a standalone business? Is it best to find a niche or go for the lowest price? I am investigating it as a way to supply some additional income and was just looking for some tips on getting off on the right foot. Is anyone here making a full time income from reseller hosting? Thanks, Dave

Do NOT go for the lowest price. Find a niche. By the time you get to be making a full time income, you will have far outgrown a reseller account.

The most crucial part in hosting reselling business is to choose reliable hosting provider from whom one is purchasing the space. The stability and performance of the hosting provider plays a vital role in the success story of the reselling business. Promotion, advertisement and customers support also added value in the business. Always ready to deploy new technology as it will attract new customers and also help in upgrading the existing one.

I'm a bit lost, are you wanting to sell reseller hosting OR sell shared hosting?

Sorry for being unclear. Use a reseller acount to sell shared hosting. Has anyone given free hosting a go? Charging for upgrades and deploying ads on customers websites?

While never offering free hosting myself, I have had customers do it and in every circumstance it ends up bad. Free hosting typically attracts shady, cheap people, people you want to stay far far away from. As far as selling shared hosting, if you can find and focus your marketing efforts on a niche then I definitely think you could be hugely successful! I would also advise staying away from offering budget type services, the profit margins are minimal at best and from what I have found the customers require a lot. The worst customers are the one that want everything for nothing. Good luck, and let us know how your search for a excellent provider goes!

Don't do free hosting. It's about the most difficult type of web hosting to make a profit at.

I think that free hosting is best done through a VPS and with a control panel built specifically for the job of free hosting--such as iPanel or XPanel.

I definitely agree with the niche aspect. Hosting companies such as ones offering green hosting was the ones which will typically stand out from the crowd.

for start reseller hosting is fine, but you must choose very stable reseller host.

Is this a difficult thing to find?

There are plenty of stable hosts out there. Any stable shared host will also provide a good reseller service. My recommendations would be HostGator and Arvixe.

It's not difficulty if you have the right mindset. Generally, you get what you pay for. So be smart and choose a host that is not selling alpha reseller accounts for $15 per month!
