If this is a new Ubuntu installation, you can specify the root password while you are logged in with the username you created during the installation. While logged in with this username, type in the Terminal: sudo passwd This is will allow to setup the root password for the first time.

Try this. Start terminal and enter: "sudo -s" after that enter your user password. After that type: "passwd root" and enter the new root password. And after that try to log in as root.
