What name should i be using for my root certificate

Posted by durangod, 08-07-2014, 02:34 PM
I already have a cert for my hosting domain which covers the site and WHMCS. It is not a wildcard so now that i am on a VPS i need to get either a wildcard which is way too much. Or get a single name cert which is alot better cost wise. So i decided on the single name for now. So to be clear when i access my root whm for the vps i go here: which i cant buy a cert for that i need a name but if i go here: it does not come up because the host name is not registered. So what are my options here, what name can i use to cover my root on the ssl cert or do i need to just register the name and then use that format hostname.domain.com ?

What I do is purchase www.domain.com for the certificate then I put code in the aspx or php file that checks if they are on port 80 then forward them to www.domain.com. Seems to work well for me.

You'll want to purchase your certificate for the FQDN you're using as the servers hostname. This could be a subdomain of your hosting domain (server1.yourhostdomain.tld) or a subdomain based on an anonymous domain you've purchased for this purpose (www1.whitelabeldomain.tld). Your server hostname will need an A record that points at the servers primary IP.

Dwagar my domain is fine as far is what the clients see.. The only issues is that when I go to the root upper levels is when i get the warning about the ssl. clients never see that.. @DWS2006 - yeah great ok you totally understand what im saying here, cool. So my host name for the vps does not need to be registered to get a cert for it then, oh ok... So its just that the name on the cert has to match the url, ok got that. Yeah so im just trying to cover what i see in the upper root levels not what the client sees cause at the client level domain for my hosting site its covered in the original cert. So i just need to go into the VPS whm and create an A record for the host name (name.domain.com) and then purchase the cert for name.domain.com and then go back to the vps whm and install the cert there and apply it to the root. Does that sound correct?

Its cool Dwagar, we all get tired, im a zombie most of the time. Having 25 heads to run a business really wears people down... Its cool appreciate the reply

That sounds perfect. You'll want to install the certificate for all services that support it ( http://docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/vie...ManageSslcerts ). The same certificate will cover them all.

ty ty ty ty ty quick question on the easybackup... you know on the other thread we were discussing memory, because of my current mem limits (hopefully to be fixed shortly) the EB is also included in the emails im getting. Does the new version have mem config options or does it go off the ini or htaccess setting. I just changed both to 250M to cover most of the stuff im getting with other programs too.

oh and i dont suppose it matters but if i get the cert with www.hostname.domain.com it will cover both with www and without. Is that what i should do or is a host name dif

Posted by durangod, 08-07-2014, 04:39 PM
i went ahead and did both just to be safe in case i ever do register it.

its always something ya know... looks like any way i go im gonna have to register this hostname. Of course my host says what is the best way to do this, park it or what.. Last edited by durangod; 08-07-2014 at 05:29 PM.

Posted by durangod, 08-07-2014, 05:53 PM

I starting looking at it again and im like what... there is a place to put the ip so i put the dot 19 address for the main shared lol.. and it installed. I thought about putting my dedicated but thats for the hosting domain... besides my root whm is the dot 19 shared

Posted by durangod, 08-07-2014, 05:56 PM

Posted by durangod, 08-07-2014, 06:04 PM
ok wow why is that link in config it needs to be with the other ssl stuff. No wonder i didnt see it.. I know it was in the docs but i was taking this step by step and i was not there yet.. Ok i am at the manage now and i will see what i can do

Posted by durangod, 08-07-2014, 06:10 PM
this is what i see on the manage page, i think my host did this cause i didnt. I think since i just installed this maybe i need to reset them or something? I put same name its the same name that i got the cert for. host.domain.com and when i look at details, all of them are self signed so they wont work but temporary see pic Attached Thumbnails   Last edited by durangod; 08-07-2014 at 06:15 PM.

ok i think we are rollen now, from the management page i installed it again with all the services checked hoping it would overwrite what was there and it did, i said yes to restart and there is one copy of them and they are all signed. so it looks like i did it.. now all i have to do is the forward we talked about... but you said theres nothing i can do about the warning even though its signed right.

interesting File does not exist: /home/xxxxxx/public_html

Posted by durangod, 08-07-2014, 06:50 PM
probably in about 6 months once im able to keep this online i might be able to go out and make some sales... lol i think it has something to do with the new cert since thats all i have changed lately... and nothing else i have has ssl. So maybe somehow root took over the domain and thats why... im googling now

Posted by durangod, 08-07-2014, 07:42 PM
ok got it, all done here... it was the fact that i installed the cert in the ssl/tls section and used "install ssl for a domain" option, once i deleted that the hosting site came right back.. so word to the wise just do it in the configuration section for manage ssl and apply to all services and youll be ok..
